What makes Roland stupid is not only his refusal to accept his responsibility as a father, but also his self-seeking attitude. I understand his point about not wanting to disrupt his future or whatever but, once a baby is born, the present takes precedence over the future as mother and father decide what needs to be done concerning the newborn child. The child’s birth changes everything. So Roland’s constant focus on the future instead of his son is what made him stupid. He is “living good” right now, but he will most likely become filled with regret at some point later in life as Beautiful Black Love eludes him.

Donald

Donald is a very educated Brother who, though he was not reared in the suburbs, now lives in a suburban neighborhood. He is married to his wife, Shonda, with whom he has three children. But he also has another daughter that he fathered two years before meeting Shonda. He left Shelley, his daughter’s mom, for Shonda after an argument they had. He has not turned back since, so his daughter, now seven years old, is growing up without a dad. He does not even want to spend time with her—at all. He just provides for her financially, forced to do so because he’s on child support. Here is some of what he had to say during my interview with him.

Me: “Why exactly did you leave Shelley for Shonda? I don’t think a simple argument caused that.”

Donald: “She just started getting out of hand, had so many issues that had nothing to do with me. But, when we first met, she wasn’t like that. It’s like she just changed overnight when she found out she was pregnant. I never cheated on her or gave her any impression that I was cheating. Not to my knowledge, anyway. But I would come home from work and she’d be sniffing all over me, interrogating me, searching my pockets and my phone. One time she even followed me to work. She started accusing me of stuff. I was innocent, though. Then, when Donella [his daughter] was born, she thought I was out getting other people pregnant. This was after the argument me and Shelley had, and I left Shelly for her.”

Me: “Damn, it seems as if you didn’t even consider how all of this would affect your daughter.”

Donald: “Nah, I considered it. But I know that she’ll use even her own child against me if she had to, and I was right. Because of her, Donella hates me now. But I already saw this coming, so I left and knew it wouldn’t make sense turning back. I have my own family now, so I’m over that. I’m sorry Donella had to get caught up in all that, but shit happens.”

Me: “Damn, that’s harsh. Do you even love Donella?”

Donald: “I love her as a child, but I don’t know her anymore, so I don’t feel the same way I used to feel about her. You might think that’s harsh, but that’s the truth.
